Iva Morris

New Mexico artist Iva Morris has been an artist for over twenty years. Since receiving her BA in Art Education at the University of New Mexico in 1981, Iva Morris has taught and participated in the several artist in residence programs and painted murals with children around the state of New Mexico.
Morris began working in pastels nine years ago and enjoys the immediacy of the medium. Her background in printmaking continues to influence her process as she is very aware of the layers of her paintings, beginning first with drawings and underpaintings in gouache and then working from hard pastels to softer ones. Her favorite stage is laying down the last creamy layer of pastel.Morris lives with her two children and husband, painter Brian O’Connor, in the small farming community of Las Nutrias, New Mexico, where she enjoyes the dramatic skies and color contrasts that she loves to paint, first en plein air and then in her studio. She has won several awards for her pastels, including three first place prizes from the Pastel Society of New Mexico. Her dramatic use of color to depict sunsets, storms and even tornados is what draws many people to her work. The pastel strokes convey the feeling of the landscape as well, adding to their appeal.“A comment made by painter Andrew Wyeth pretty much sums up my approach to art: art is nothing more than the people that you love and the place where you live.
